AI Labs in Rhineland-Palatinate
- AI labs promote the transfer of AI technologies from research to companies. They enable the gathering of experience in individualized test environments. In this way, possible applications can be tested in defined areas without making any investments.

IDIAL - Intelligent Services Innovative Agile Local
The IDIAL project – Intelligent Services Innovative Agile Local – supports small and medium-sized craft businesses in Rhineland-Palatinate on their path to digitalisation with solutions from the field of artificial intelligence (AI). Generative AI offers enormous potential for business processes, but is often too complex and costly for SMEs. High licensing and operating costs, data protection requirements and a confusing variety of solutions make implementation difficult. IDIAL aims to overcome these challenges by having DFKI develop AI services for knowledge workers in the skilled trades that are specifically tailored to the needs of smaller companies, while ITA contributes its expertise in ergonomics and eBZ supports the practical implementation. Together, they are researching and developing economical and practical approaches that optimise work processes in the field of knowledge work and take into account the specific requirements of SMEs.

SmartCity Living Lab – SCLL
SmartCity Living Lab (SCLL), an interdisciplinary research project at the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI GmbH), is developing and testing innovative information and communication technology for the cities of tomorrow. At our Kaiserslautern site, in cooperation with partner institutions, we are researching how modern technology can be deployed sensibly and systematically in cities so that it can contribute in different areas to sustainable urban development.

KI-Lab: Trading off Non-Functional Properties of Machine Learning (TOPML)
In the TOPML project, interactions and dependencies of different properties of machine learning are to be analyzed and balanced. Transparency and fairness of data and algorithms as well as data protection and efficient use of resources such as electricity are being examined. The focus is on competing needs, for example, how decentralized data can be stored and processed to protect privacy, to what extent this affects the transparency of algorithms and data, and what impact it has on energy consumption. The various conflicting goals are identified and characterized in order to create sustainable compromises for application. Ethical and legal aspects should be taken into account.
Goals:
- Identification of conflicting goals that are legally and ethically relevant in an application
- Prioritization of desirable non-functional properties
