  When OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently stated in a podcast that the development of artificial intelligence is on the verge of the singularity, it became a topic of national discussion.

  The Augsburger Allgemeine asked two experts to provide their perspectives on the matter: Prof. Stephan Schneider from Kiel University of Applied Sciences and
  Steffen Reithermann, AI project manager at the Machine Learning Group (Computer Science Department) at RPTU Kaiserslautern-Landau and Managing Director of the AI Project Office of the AI Alliance Rhineland-Palatinate.

  Reithermann places the term in its historical context: Discussions of the singularity date back over 60 years, ranging from a remark by Stanislaw Ulam in 1958 to the “intelligence explosion” proposed by statistician Irving John Good, all the way to Ray Kurzweil.
  What’s new isn’t the concept itself, but rather that the CEO of a major AI company is using it as a diagnosis of the present.
  As a scientific statement, however, the term holds no weight: “The Singularity is not a measurable value, but an interpretation,” he is quoted as saying in the article.

  In his view, the more important news of the summer was a different incident - a security breach in which two AI models broke out of their isolated environment during an internal test to access the model solutions for the benchmark against which they were being evaluated.
  For Reithermann, this is not the “awakening of the machine,” but rather a control issue: “You don’t need a malicious system to lose control.”
